Connecting people in need with people who care...

Thousands of volunteers reach out in hundreds of different ways to help homeless and needy people change their lives. But it's not merely the needy people that are impacted. Just ask someone who has volunteered at the Mission–they'll tell you that the life most impacted is their own.

Groups

Help impact neighborhoods while learning about our city!
Our Minneapolis program currently focuses on the Phillips neighborhood on the south side of Minneapolis. Within this diverse neighborhood more than 70 different languages are spoken - much of the world is represented here! The Union Gospel Mission works to provide food and outreach to those in this community who are in need. This offers an opportunity for volunteers to get to know the city through an “urban immersion” combined with barbeque outreach.

A testimony: “I find it personally exciting to be offered this type of experiential learning. My hope is that with the knowledge and experience learned groups will not only feel good about having helped the Union Gospel Mission, they will find themselves empowered to do similar events in their own communities or wherever God’s Spirit calls them.

3 alternatives to get to know the city while choosing to serve:

  • Groups can choose a full day urban immersion mission’s experience. This will likely involve a tour of the area, an orientation on why and how to set up a personalized urban barbeque event targeting around 300 participants, and the actual conduct of the event (including clean up and debriefing evaluation). There is a fee of $49 per person with a 10 person minimum.

  • Groups can also choose a half day experience (4-5 hours). This will include only the conduct of an urban barbeque event. We ask $25 per person with a 10 person minimum, essentially covering the cost of the supplies.

An urban immersion outreach will involve the following:
    • Prayer prior to and during event
    • Set up, conduct, and clean up barbeque
    • Provide children’s activities and games (i.e. face painting, hair braiding, crafts, etc.)
    • Provide trained lay chaplains to pray with people, provide personal ministry, distribute Bibles, CD’s, and literature

If a group has additional talents and skills the following may be included:

    • Musicians – offer non-amplified music for event
    • Mini-programs – provide drama, puppetry or other presentations
    • Spanish speakers – connect with non-English speaking Latino community

  • Groups can choose to take a guided tour. Participants will learn about the area’s diversity including ethnicity, religion, and economic status, plus the rich history of south Minneapolis. Each tour will take approximately two hours and the cost is $75 per tour. Groups are responsible to provide their own transportation to accommodate the group plus the tour guide. There is only 1 guide currently available.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities to help impact neighborhoods while learning about the city, please contact Roger Quant, UGM Group Volunteers Manager.
