Our History

Founded in 1902 in Saint Paul, Union Gospel Mission (UGM) has responded to the needs of homeless and hopeless people in the Twin Cities metro area for more than 100 years. Primarily known for its work with homeless and chemically dependent men, the Mission also has a long history of providing practical assistance for women and children.

UGM opened its doors at 414 Jackson Street in Saint Paul
Medical Clinic opened with the assistance of Dr. Harvey O.Skinner
Rescue Home opened for unwed mothers
Purchased land in Shoreview and constructed Gyro Lodge to create Gospel Hill Camp for inner-city children
Opened the Saint Paul Boys Club in downtown Saint Paul (later the Arthur H. Savage Club)

Ober Community Center dedicated (Frogtown area)
Day nursery installed for mothers during “war emergency”
First year for Thanksgiving basket give-away program
Workman’s Pool organized for job placement and Gift Drop Center opened
Free Dental Clinic opened with volunteer dentists

Shoreview alcohol/drug recovery center opened at our Shoreview location
New Men’s Campus completed on University Avenue East in Saint Paul, along with UGM Thrift Store (later Central Services)
Discipleship Program began

 
Peter MacFarlane building dedicated for Christ Recovery Center, expanding drug and alcohol programs
  1992 Capp Towers purchased for Naomi Family Residence for homeless women and children
  1994 LifeNet Learning Center opened at Men’s Campus
1996 Women’s LifeNet Learning Center opened at Naomi Family Residence
1997 Child Care Center opened
WorkNet career development program started
2001 Ona Orth Ministry Center completed at Shoreview location
2004 Children’s Gospel Mission chooses UGM to receive Minneapolis building and ministry
2005
Hmong ministry, Family & Youth Advancement Services, Inc., joins UGM
Gateway Program launched to help ex-offenders lead productive lives
Ober Community Center renovated and reactivated
SuccessNet program created and launched
